Ayer empezó el toque de queda en Perú, decretado por el presidente Vizcarra, para prevenir la expansión del Coronavirus. Como se sabrá, son más de 50 los que padecen de este nuevo virus que ha tomado fuerzas desde China, extendiéndose por múltiples países del mundo, Perú siendo uno de ellos.
Hay que preguntarse, ¿cómo va a afectar este aislamiento más allá de los escenarios económicos y sociales? ¿Cómo afrontar el hecho de quedarse en casa por 15 días?
Algunos creyeron que se trataba de unas vacaciones, saliendo a centros comerciales o playas sin tomar en cuenta las consecuencias de sus actos en momentos críticos como este. Otros pensarán que este aislamiento es exagerado y que obstaculizará su libertad, en especial porque ya no pueden realizar actividades productivas como su trabajo.
Esta medida preventiva se puede ver como una prisión demasiado desproporcionada; sin embargo, ¿qué pasaría si se la viera de otra forma?
Si creemos que estamos atrapados hasta que la situación se resuelva sola o alguien lo haga, entonces déjame contarte la historia de Victor Frankl y el poder de la autoconciencia.
«Frankl era un determinista, educado en la tradición de la psicología freudiana según la cual lo que nos sucede de niños da forma a nuestro carácter y personalidad, y gobierna básicamente la totalidad de nuestra vida. Los límites y parámetros de nuestra vida estarían fijados y, en lo esencial, no sería mucho lo que podríamos hacer al respecto.
Frankl era también psiquiatra y judío. Estuvo encerrado en campos de concentración de la Alemania nazi, donde experimentó cosas tan repugnantes para nuestro sentido de la decencia que incluso repetirlas aquí nos provoca zozobra.
Sus padres, su hermano y su mujer murieron en los campos, en cámaras de gas. Con la excepción de su hermana, perdió a toda su familia. El propio Frankl fue torturado y sometido a innumerables humillaciones, sin estar nunca seguro de si en el momento siguiente lo llevarían a la cámara de gas o se quedaría entre los que se «salvaban», los cuales retiraban los cuerpos o recogían las cenizas de los condenados.
Un día, desnudo y solo en una pequeña habitación, empezó a tomar conciencia de lo que denominó «la libertad última», esa libertad que sus carceleros nazis no podían quitarle. Ellos podían controlar todo su ambiente, hacer lo que quisieran con su cuerpo, pero el propio Victor Frankl era un ser autoconsciente capaz de ver como observador su propia participación en los hechos. Su identidad básica estaba intacta. En su interior él podía decidir de qué modo podía afectarle todo aquello. Entre lo que le sucedía, o los estímulos y su respuesta, estaba su libertad o su poder para cambiar esa respuesta.
En medio de sus experiencias, Frankl se proyectaba hacia contextos distintos; por ejemplo, se imaginaba dando conferencias ante sus alumnos después de haber sido liberado del campo de concentración. En el aula se describiría a sí mismo y expondría como lección que había aprendido durante la tortura.
Por la vía de disciplinas de este tipo (mentales, emocionales, morales, usando principalmente la memoria y la imaginación) ejercitó su pequeña y embrionaria libertad, que entonces creció, hasta llegar a ser mayor que la de sus carceleros nazis. Los nazis tenían más libertad exterior, más opciones entre las que podían elegir en su ambiente, pero él tenía más libertad interior, más poder interno para ejercitar sus opciones. Se convirtió en un ejemplo para quienes lo rodeaban, incluso para algunos de los guardias. Ayudó a otros a encontrar un sentido en su sufrimiento y dignidad en su vida de prisioneros.
En las más degradantes circunstancias imaginables, Frankl usó el privilegio humano de la autoconciencia para descubrir un principio fundamental de la naturaleza del hombre: entre el estímulo y la respuesta, el ser humano tiene la libertad interior de elegir.»
Existe la libertad de elegir cómo nos afectará este aislamiento. Podemos quejarnos e intentar quebrantar las reglas lo cual desencadenará sanciones o más infectados por el Coronavirus, o podemos creer que aún somos libres e imaginarnos lo que haremos cuando esta crisis haya terminado.
Tenemos ese poder, porque, a diferencia de este virus cuya única naturaleza es hacer daño, nosotros podemos meditar sobre nuestras acciones, podemos planificar para que tengan un resultado positivo o uno negativo.
